MHFA Champion — 1-day course
A middle option: one day of training that gives you the knowledge to recognise mental ill health and the confidence to champion mental health awareness in your workplace.
The one-day MHFA Champion course sits between the half-day awareness course and the full two-day qualification. It gives you a practical understanding of common mental health issues, the skills to support someone in distress and the tools to advocate for a mentally healthy workplace.
It is a popular choice for line managers: enough depth to hold a supportive conversation and signpost properly, without the two-day commitment of the full Mental Health First Aider qualification.
What you'll learn
- Understand common mental health conditions and how they present
- Recognise when a colleague may be struggling and respond supportively
- Signpost to appropriate professional help
- Champion positive mental health and challenge stigma in your workplace
Who it's for
- Line managers and team leaders
- Organisations building a tiered approach (Champions across teams, First Aiders per site)
- Anyone who wants practical skills in a single day
Things to consider
- Champions are not qualified Mental Health First Aiders — for a designated first-aider role, the two-day course is the standard
Frequently asked questions
Champion or full Mental Health First Aider — which should our managers do?
A common pattern is Champion training for line managers (awareness plus supportive-conversation skills) and the two-day course for a smaller number of designated Mental Health First Aiders. If budget allows only one, choose based on whether the person holds a formal first-aider role.
