MHFA England courses

MHFA England is the licensed provider of Mental Health First Aid training in England, and its courses — delivered by a national network of accredited instructors — are the most widely recognised by UK employers. Also commonly delivered in Wales.

Adult MHFA (2 day)

The flagship qualification. Trains you to spot the signs of mental ill health, respond with confidence and guide someone to appropriate support — the mental health equivalent of a physical first aid certificate.

MHFA Champion (1 day)

A middle option: one day of training that gives you the knowledge to recognise mental ill health and the confidence to champion mental health awareness in your workplace.

Mental Health Aware (half day)

An introductory session covering what mental health is, how to challenge stigma, and basic skills for supporting someone in distress. Ideal for rolling out to a whole workforce.

Youth MHFA (2 day)

The youth-focused equivalent of the two-day course: trains adults to spot and support mental health issues in children and young people aged 8 to 18.

MHFA Refresher (half day)

A half-day top-up for qualified Mental Health First Aiders and Champions — renews knowledge, updates you on best practice and keeps your skills current.

Other accredited options

Depending on where you are and what your organisation needs — regulated qualifications, clinical accreditation, a single provider for physical and mental health first aid — one of these may be the better fit.

Scotland

SMHFA (Scotland)

Scotland has its own mental health first aid programme, developed for NHS Health Scotland. If you're based in Scotland, SMHFA is the locally recognised equivalent of the MHFA England course.

FAA regulated awards

A regulated alternative to MHFA England: Ofqual-listed First Aid for Mental Health qualifications at three levels, often delivered by the same providers who run workplace physical first aid courses.

Half day (Level 1), 1 day (Level 2) or 2 days (Level 3 supervising)£95–£250 pp

St John Ambulance

The UK’s best-known first aid charity also runs a suite of workplace mental health courses, from awareness sessions to multi-day mental health first aider training.
